American Novel To 1900 The Blithedale Romance.

What I've just given you is but a very brief outline, and I've leftout some important strands in the recent history of Hawthorneinterpretation. For instance, critics have argued especially in thelast 25 years that Hawthorne's work is about gender, about what itmeans to be a man or a woman. But suffice it to say that, by andlarge, we're currently in the period of politico-historicalinterpretations of Hawthorne's fiction. This fiction, the criticstell us these days, is about the most influential political andcultural issues of Hawthorne's day: slavery, women's rights (or lackthereof), domesticity, utopian movements, the advance of technology. We have studies of Hawthorne and slavery and abolition, Hawthorne andgender, and Hawthorne and national identity. We see studies, too, ofHawthorne and mesmerism, which was popular in Hawthorne's day andwhich figures prominently in The House of the Seven Gables andThe Blithedale Romance, and of Hawthorne and daguerreotypephotography, which came into existence during Hawthorne's life andplays an important role in The House of the Seven Gables.

Hawthorne criticism in the 1960's and 1970's was heavily influencedby one book, Frederick Crews's The Sins of the Fathers: Hawthorne's Psychological Themes, published in 1966. This book is neither the only nor the first psychoanalyticalinterpretation of Hawthorne's fiction, but it was certainly the mostinfluential. In The Sins of the Fathers, Crews providesblatantly Freudian interpretations of all of Hawthorne's romances andbest-known tales. When we re-read this book from our perspectivealmost forty years later, we may be tempted to find almost laughablethe inevitable turn in Crews's interpretation of each tale andromance to Freud's Oedipus complex; perhaps that's because thatreduction of each of Hawthorne's fictions to an Oedipal tensionquickly becomes predictable: after reading just a few chapters, wecome to expect the invocation of the Oedipus complex.

You can read Tompkins's response in her influential book, SentimentalDesigns: predictably, for Tompkins, who Hawthorne was has alwaysbeen in dispute. In other words, not only have Hawthorne's tales andromances meant different things to different readers and interpretersin different generations but Hawthorne himself has been a differentperson to different generations of biographers. Tompkins, in awonderful passage, cites two examples of biographical descriptions ofHawthorne, each taken from the introduction to the section onHawthorne in an anthology of American literature. The first examplecomes from a 1932 anthology, called Century Readings in AmericanLiterature, whose editor, Fred Lewis Pattee, describes Hawthorneas follows: "'shy and solitary,' 'writing, dreaming, wanderingabout the city at night,' a writer whose Puritanism was a 'pale nightflower' that bloomed amidst the 'old decay and ruin' of a town whosemoldering docks conveyed a sense of 'glory departed.'" The second example comes from the introduction to the Hawthornesection by Hershel Parker, one of the editors of the 1979 edition ofThe Norton Anthology of American Literature. Parker, according to Tompkins, "gives us the 'healthy' Hawthorne ofRandall Stewart's revisionist biography, the Hawthorne who loved'tramping,' drinking, smoking, and cardplaying, who socialized, flirted, and traveled 'as far as Detroit.'"

One hundred is small enough to force some tough choices. It kills me to leave off the list Herman Melville’s Typee (1846), Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Marble Faun (1860), Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and many others. Yet 100 is also large enough to include a few eccentric enthusiasms, for example, Harold Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) and Daniel Fuchs’s Summer in Williamsburg (1934), two works of high comedy.
