Feminist Fairy TalesA list of feminist versions of familiar tales.
Topic: Fairy tales are so old that they date back to the oral tradition when stories were told by word of mouth instead of paper and pen. This is why there is no one main version of a fairy tale; each version differs depending on the region, the audience, the translators, and so on. Despite their differences, there is one goal that classic fairy tales have, which is to represent the fundamental flaws of human nature and create morals to teach audiences (particularly children) to avoid those flaws. It is this element that is most interesting for critical thinkers, who work to scrutinize truth, identify discrepancies, and avoid logical errors. Therefore, addressing these morals as arguments is what we will do for this essay, and our job will be to determine the strength and/or weaknesses of these arguments.
This specific type of study can be valuable when looking at all types of literature, but a specific branch of literature, fairy tales, offers an intriguing outlook.

In libraries, depending on the system of classification, books of fairy tales may be in a variety of places. Libraries using the Dewey Decimal System will probably keep most of their fairy tales books at call numbers beginning with 398, the Dewey number for folklore, especially 398.2 up to (but not including) 398.5. There may also be some collections of fairy tales in the short story section, with the call number 808.83. In libraries using the Library of Congress classification system, it will probably be helpful to look in the catalog under the subject heading Fairy Tales to find out where they keep their books. Remember, you can always ask a librarian for assistance!
Fairy tales have been modernized and transformed into many genres, in ways that expose their undesirable hidden meaning for adults' enjoyment or eliminate it for children's enjoyment. For example, Stephen Sondheim dealt with the "latent" themes of adultery, dishonesty, and death in his acclaimed 1986 musical, Into the Woods. In sharp contrast, Disney's animated versions of fairy tales tend to focus on the magical and comforting aspects of the stories because they are marketed towards children. One famous Disney reversal of a fairy tale is its version of The Little Mermaid. While Hans Christian Andersen's 1836 version ends with the protagonist turning into a spirit in limbo, a fate potentially frightening to children, Disney's 1989 version ends with her turning into a human and marrying the man of her dreams. Fairy tales are considered to have given rise to the fantasy genre, which retains many of their motifs. The endurance of fairy tales for so many centuries and across so many cultures validates their importance in human development as well as their entertainment value. Even in a digital age when technology is constantly outpacing itself, it is hard to imagine that fairy tales will ever become obsolete.

1.) Transformation is an element that appears in many fairy tales. Whether through supernatural occurrences or through more natural means, characters undergo transformations that enchant readers. Discuss how transformation occurs in at least 3 texts from our course readings and how the point of transformation is important in the chosen narratives.
2.) Choose a motif (or motifs) from the fairy tales we have studied. Discuss how the motif functions in at least 3 texts from our course readings. Identify and analyze how changes in, or absence of, the motif(s) alter the narratives.
3.) Much critical attention to the fairy tale genre focuses on the narratives as agents of socialization. As we have noted in the course, much of the socialization is gender specific, and focused on proper behaviour for young women within a given time and culture. Discuss the gendered focus of the narratives and their associated moral lessons in at least 3 texts from our course readings with attention to the implications and responses such texts provoke.
4.) In many of the twentieth and twenty-first-century revisions of fairy tales we have encountered in the course, the author shifts the mode of narration to give the reader a different perspective on a familiar tale. Discuss how a shift in narrative voice offers the reader new possibilities for interpretation of well-known fairy tale narratives by analyzing narration in at least 3 texts from our course readings.
5.) Compare 3 variants of the same tale type through the cultural shifts we have discussed in the course. How does a modernist writer or a feminist writer of fairy tales convey their perspective of contemporary socio-historical issues through fairy tale narratives?
Once again, the Dewey Decimal System will probably shelve most books about fairy tales in the call number 398, particularly 398 up to (but not including) 398.5. They are typically mixed in with actual storybooks of fairy and folk tales, so some browsing will probably be necessary. Useful Library of Congress subject headings might include: Fairy Tales'Classification, Fairy Tales'History and Criticism, and Symbolism in Fairy Tales, among others. Remember, it is always helpful to ask a librarian for guidance, and he or she will be happy to assist you.
