First, East of Eden is a reenactment of the Cain and Abel tale.
Though each character in East of Eden may have a slightly different idea of what the American Dream is, becoming rich and wanting a better life for one's children seem to be a common thread in the lives of Faye and Cathy, Adam, and Cyrus....
Lewis's use of the term is somewhat problematic for sinologists for several reasons. First, in classical China, Taoist philosophers saw themselves as antithetical to the philosophical school of Legalism, with its overtones of rules and laws for correct behavior. They resisted distilling the Tao into actual rules or axioms claiming, "The Tao that can be named is not the Tao." Classical Chinese , like Western ideas of natural law, was more concerned with naming, listing, defining, and punishing breaches of specific moral principles. Taoism expressly opposed intellectual "cleverness" and possibly by implication all attempts at systematic logic. Second, in the western tradition, Christian thinkers like Thomas Aquinas saw natural laws as universal and unchanging by definition. If natural law punished theft in 700 BC, it would still punish theft in 2017 AD. This contrasts with the fluid nature of the Tao in Chinese thought, which believed that harmony with nature required change and flexibility as circumstances changed. Third, Lewis seems to equate natural law with the laws of nature--i.e., the physical universe. The Tao in his use would be wisely conforming to innate limitations or requirements of the physical universe as designed by God, who stands outside (or beyond) nature. That does not match well with Taoist thought, in which the Tao not only is harmonious behavior with nature, it contains or includes nature itself, and even supernatural beings (like a God or gods) would be enclosed inside it, as the Tao is "all that is." In spite of those distinctions, Lewis chooses the Chinese term rather than the Western medieval term to describe natural or universal laws, though it is unclear (as Lewis spoke no Mandarin) whether Lewis is deliberately choosing a problematic term or whether he is unaware of the inconsistencies and presuming similarities between classical Greco-Roman thinking and classical Chinese thinking.

Evil in East of Eden "God saw that all he had created was very good.
Christ In the novel, East of Eden, John Steinbeck proposes the idea that man has much more control over his own destiny than many chose to believe-a conclusion reached from Steinbeck's own interpretation of the story of Cain and Able wherein God neither instructs Cain to master the sin which is crouching at his door, nor predicts that Cain will master it, but rather gives Cain the ability to choose.
Much of the plot of East of Eden is centered upon the two sets of brothers representing Cain and Abel. Both pairs are similar to Cain and Abel in the way they go about winning their fathers’ favors. All four give gifts to their fathers, and the fathers dismiss the gifts of Charles and Caleb, the Cain representations (Marks, Jay Lester....

Thesis Statement on East of Eden | Category: English
Although I do not remember the contents of that particular passage anymore, I remember that it was the power of Steinbeck's simple, direct language that urged me to take it on as my next big foray into what my high school English teacher called "real literature."
The Cain and Abel story, possibly the most enigmatic story of good and evil in the Bible, is the basis for East of Eden.
